New Years Resolutions Day & Happy New Year!

Hello Bucket List peeps,

We just wanted to say that we really appreciate you and are excited for all that you will do in 2016!!! You may or may not know, but Jan 1 is always the busiest day of the year on our website. I was going to take a moment to write a “new year”/”new years resolutions” note but then I received a great email from an inspirational friend of mine Curtis Christopherson (AKA “Coach Curtis”, thats what I call him anyways ;-)) and I thought it was a perfect message to share with our community. Hope you guys enjoy it reading it as much as I did this morning.


Here is the email:

Subject:  New Years Resolutions Day & Happy New Year

For many people this is the last day before they “change their lives forever”. This is the last day of gluttony before they begin to eat their new diet, this is the last day of sloth before they decide to exercise, or this is their last day of greed before they begin to spend more time with their families. This is the day of high hopes and good intentions, the day where everyone is planning on becoming better.

Unfortunately, the reality for the majority of resolutioners is that this is the last day you will have hope, because most resolutions don’t make it out of the first month.

This doesn’t mean that we sack our hopes and continue with the status quo. This doesn’t mean that we throw our goals out the window and succumb to the life we are tired of living. This does mean that we need to understand why we fail so that we have the ability to continue once failure happens. Failure doesn’t stop our resolutions, quitting does. One (quitting) we have complete control over and the other (failure) we have partial control over.

The first reason our resolutions don’t work is because we fail to talk to ourselves correctly. When we make resolutions we frequently use the word “don’t”. “Don’t eat too much food”, “don’t miss the day at the gym”, “don’t waste the day”. When it comes to focus, your mind doesn’t recognize the word “don’t” and because of this we create a negative self-fulfilling prophecy which empowers exactly what we are trying not to do. If we put a purpose to our thinking then we have a more powerful thought process. “I am going to the gym today because………” allows us to focus on why we are doing what we are going to do and takes out the passive nature of “don’t”. When we speak to ourselves powerfully, we create powerful thinking, which then creates empowerment. And might…just might…create the RESULTS (aka change) we are after.

The second reason resolutions fail is because we attach our goals to people outside of ourselves. “I am going to spend more time with my family because they need to see me more often” is a great resolution but is essentially generic and external. Half of this resolution is dependant on the idea that your family will be around to spend time with you. Any changes we make in life need to be selfish acts. This does not mean that you are a selfish person; it just means that you need to take control over you before you can become anything to someone else. When we act on the behalf of others, they have the control. When control is outside of ourselves then we don’t stand a chance to make the change because we don’t have the investment in change.

The final reason resolutions fail is because we are afraid to fail. Our fear of failure allows us to back out once things get tough. By doing this we are able to justify to ourselves that we chose to quit, we didn’t fail the task. Your reality is that if you are making a resolution, at some point you will fail, temptation during the initial stages of change are just too great. Failure however is not the end point of the journey, instead it is a new beginning where you are able to start off smarter then you were the last time you started. If you are unwilling to accept your role in failure then you are destined to repeat the same exact failure. If you are willing to see your fault, then you are willing to go beyond fear and enter empowerment, which ultimately will create the change you are seeking.

If you are among the millions of people who make resolution at this time of year, remember that without the power of you, your resolutions don’t stand a chance. If your current state of mind won’t allow you to commit, then save yourself the time and don’t try to fake the commitment. If you are seeking change in life you need to understand that resolutions aren’t a once a year thing, resolutions are an every day effort that ebbs and flows with the demands and changes of your life; once you are ready to accept them.

On that note, in 2016 I encourage all of you to challenge yourself, be open to be challenged by someone else, take your health serious, focus on any goals you have set, be committed at achieving the results you are after, take risks, maximize opportunity, and most importantly take control of your destiny. Life is not easy and there will be obstacles and unforeseen challenges that will come your way but if you surround yourself with great people, you should have the support you need.

Hack your bucket list in 2016

Earlier we talked about the popular goals on bucket list and then (I hope) inspired you with the most incredible achievements of 2015. Well what about 2016? How can you set yourself up for successfully ticking off your bucket list?

Every January 1, what do we all do? If you are like 99% of the world the answer is probable set some resolutions of things you hope to achieve that year. However with over 92% of the population failing to meet their goals, are we doomed to fail? I hope not.

When we’re in a world that uses technology every minute of every day, why shouldn’t it be used to help us achieve our dreams? Here at Bucketlist, we are surrounded on a day to day basis with support to follow and live our life goals. But I understand that is a rarity in the workplace. So, today I’m going to break down how you can create your own environment for success in all aspects of your life!

How successful people are achieve their goals

I always find it beyond helpful to learn from experiences rather than suggestions, so for the first part of this post, let’s take a close look at how successful people become successful. From my research there seems to be a few commonalities.

  1. They are extremely self aware – in one way or another, it seems that the people that are most successful in the goals are the ones that truly and deeply understand where their strengths and weaknesses lie. By perfecting what you are great at and developing upon your weaknesses, you inevitably will become more efficient at everything you do.
  2. They plan out everything – from their daily routine to their 5 year plan. The most successful people have a calendar and they stick to it. Setting targets into your everyday routines will help you achieve your goals.
  3. They form a community of like-minded strong individuals to gain support and insight. Ever heard of the expression, it takes a village to raise a child? Well, are we ever really finished growing? By surrounding yourself with people who are a positive influence, at a subconscious level you will begin to absorb their insights and wisdom to achieve you life goals – and some really cool people to join in on your bucket list goals.

Using technology to streamline your goal setting

Technology today has the ability to help you achieve your goals. Our aim, here at, is to use technology to help your dreams become a reality, and there are a few key ways technology can help you achieve your bucket list.

  1. Start by writing it down

Sounds simple right? But taking the time to really think out what you want to accomplish is something a lot of us simply neglect to do. Brainstorm a few key overall areas you want to target; like personal development, travel, adventure, family etc, and then break those categories further into your bucket list. Of course your bucket list is always growing and developing so this is in no way a definitive life list.

But how can technology replace your trusted notebook? Easy, by adding your goals to your you now have the added bonuses of being able to access and browse your bucket list, and never loosing/misplacing your list, after you’ve put on all this effort into what you want to accomplish.

We know that studies have shown, people who have their goals visible on a daily basis are much more likely to accomplish them than those that don’t.

  1. Add due dates and targets to your goals

With most things in life, the person you can rely on most is yourself. No ones going to push you to travel to the great wall of China, or learn to speak four languages. If you want to accomplish something its really up to you to do so. Setting due dates and targets to your goals will help create a little sense of urgency. Nothings set in stone, but keeping your goals in the forefront of your mind, should help keep your goals on track and tangible.

  1. Share your goals with friends, family, and the community

People who wrote down their goals, shared this information with a friend, and sent weekly updates to that friend were on average 33% more successful in accomplishing their stated goals than those who merely formulated goals.Reference

By using these tips you can start breaking down your bucket list into actionable steps. I just know you’re going to have the best year ever.

Every January 1, millions of people set goals they want to achieve in the upcoming year. Things are bright, fresh and full of possibilities! Resolutions are great, right? But by the time February 15th rolls round, I’m guessing 90% of people have, sadly, given up and slipped into their old – bad – habits. Personal development should be something we strive for on a daily basis. Yet sometimes this superb bucket list category is grossly abused. What could be better than learning and growing as a human being? The flashy and exciting goals like traveling or the adrenaline- fueled adventures often outshine skills and development. But new skills are some of the most valuable goals you can accomplish on your bucket list. They not only help you with your personal development, but also have such a positive impact on the world around you.

Realistically, just 8% of people keep with their pledges. Resolutions get a bad rap because they are set with the wrong state of mind. We see that people often set these goals on a faulty foundation of what is popular. The Paleo diet? Sounds like a great way to drop the pounds. Juice cleanse? Time to detox the skin and your stomach. But once a difficult patch hits, it’s easier to give up than to readjust your goals and objectives.

It’s official, we’re in the final months of 2015. Just a little over 3 months it will be time to shake off the christmas slumber and jump start 2016.

Even though it feel like just yesterday we set those amazing resolutions goals for the year, it’s actually time to shake off that list and realize that the only time limits with have on our goals are self imposed.
